BIOGRAPHIE
Remarquée aux côtés de Moodoïd et de Melody’s Echo Chamber, Maud Nadal vole de ses propres ailes depuis un morceau (À la fin, titre paradoxal pour un point de départ) publié sur une compilation de La Souterraine en 2015. La révélation est immédiate. Et l’ascension fulgurante puisque Halo Maud est aujourd’hui adoubée par Baxter Dury et Phoenix, dont elle a les honneurs des premières parties.

Élevée en Auvergne dans une famille de musiciens autodidactes, Maud Nadal découvre l’alto et la guitare. À Paris, elle grandit au son anglo-saxon : PJ Harvey, Cat Power, dont l’un de ses albums lui inspire le projet Myra Lee. Si elle écrit d’abord instinctivement en anglais, cette multi-instrumentiste n’est pas insensible à la plume de Dominique A qu’elle découvre sur le tard, avec Brigitte Fontaine et bien d’autres. Écrire dans sa langue maternelle ne lui était pas naturel : « Il m'a fallu du temps pour trouver ma voix en français, pour trouver ma langue même », confesse-t-elle rétrospectivement.

En fondant Halo Maud à la fin de l’année 2014, elle tient une première ébauche en français, Dans la nuit. Son absence de références francophones est un atout. Ce qui ne l’empêche pas de figurer parmi les paroliers des Vestiges du chaos (2016) de Christophe. Composant sans compter et mariant indifféremment ses deux langues musicales, Maud élabore avec le producteur Robin Leduc (The Rodeo, Marie Flore) un son à la fois vaporeux et flottant, hypnotique et réverbéré. Avec des paroles à « 99% autobiographiques », Je suis une île s’impose comme le titre de l’album, témoignant autant de la solitude de son auteure que de sa singularité.

Comme nul n’est prophète en son pays, Halo Maud trouve refuge chez Michel Records, une structure montréalaise, qui publie son premier EP, Du pouvoir (2017). Avant de signer à l’automne dernier chez le prestigieux label londonien Heavenly (Saint Etienne, Temples, Baxter Dury, Toy). Musicienne active et souvent courtisée (Marietta, Lescop, Corridor, Bon Voyage Organisation…), Maud sait aussi s’entourer, avec un super-groupe à ses côtés : le batteur Stéphane Bellity (Ricky Hollywood), le claviériste Olivier Marguerit (O), le bassiste Vincent Mougel et, et en studio le guitariste Benjamin Glibert (Aquaserge),. Cette dream team hexagonale s’en donne à coeur joie pendant l’enregistrement du disque, mixé en quasi totalité par Angy Laperdrix (Barbagallo, Chevalrex, Julien Gasc).

French singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Halo Maud was revealed to the public in 2015 by La Souterraine, a collective determined to uncover and promote French talent. Her high-brow pop, which she sees as a kind of lab in which she examines the passage of time, has already garnered the attention of international press that led her to perform with her band in Canada twice (in 2017 and 2018) as well the US (2018).

If the forest and boulders among which she grew up have left a mark on her inner world, it manifests itself first through her obsession with time, which "never passes at the right speed”, and her marked inclination for the weightless melodies that guide her writing.

Halo Maud is constantly searching, for a sound, her voice, and the meaning of just about everything. That's probably why she refuses to choose between French and English, between song structures and epic trances, between reverb drenched vocals and intimately close breathing. She assembles and cuts up undulating guitars, percussion, and the voices of children, the elements over which she lets her voice scale vertiginous heights.

Her lyrics are also often about searching for something, and a certain idea of solitude; whether it's a matter of self-confidence, rites of passage, or loves that have come and gone, it's always somewhere between waiting and running away. Because of an unfortunate tendency to want everything, she's always attempting to be both precise and vague, to reconcile convoluted harmonies and spontaneity.

Halo Maud found a home with Michel Records, a Montreal label which released her first EP, Du pouvoir (2017), before signing during the fall of 2017 with prestigious London label Heavenly (Saint Etienne, Temples, Baxter Dury, Toy) which released her debut album Je suis une île (except for Canada, still via Michel Records)
